Service Learning Instructions

  1. All students wishing to complete their service learning hours outside of Kelly High School must obtain pre-approval from their service learning coach. The hours being completed outside of school must relate to the curriculum being taught at Kelly. Any hours completed outside of school without prior approval will not be accepted.

    a. Ms. OConnor- Senior Coach.
    b. Mr. Magdaleno- Junior Coach.
    c. Ms. Wegner- Sophomores Coach.
    d. Mr. J. Pales and Mr. Vonesh- Freshmen.

  2. All service learning hours must be submitted by April 1st of every year. No hours from any previous academic school year will be accepted.

  3. No partial hours will be awarded to any student who does not complete a project.

  4. Students may not earn Service Learning hours through the following:
    • Work with for-profit businesses and corporations.
    • Religious organizations if the service involves proselytizing.
    • Volunteer work where no academic objective is addressed.
    • Work that is financially reimbursed. Students may not earn hours for the following specific activities:
    • Volunteer work with a political campaign without the mediation of an approved community organization or classroom instructor.
    • Participation in a sports team or other extra-curricular activity unless that group designs a Service Learning project that contains the components listed above.
    • Assisting a teacher (i.e. correcting papers, cleaning the classroom).
  5. Evidence of completion:
    Hours Done Outside of Kelly
    a.A letter from the organization that you assisted.
    b.The letter must state the activities or projects that you participated in.

    Hours Done at Kelly
    Students who participate in school wide or classroom projects, the project sponsor will submit the students name to the appropriate coach.

    Reflection
    In order for your hours to be completed, every student must write a reflection paper upon the completion of your project. The reflection must be submitted online via the Kelly Website. No hours will be awarded without a reflection.

Darfur Community Outreach Schedule

(April 16)
We will continue our fundraising efforts during reportcard pick up on Thursday April 22. Students will need to be here from 12-6pm. Please see Mr. Magdaleno on Monday April 19th after 8th period for further instructions. Please come to room 116.

Community-led Violence Prevention Campaign

(April 13)
The Brighton Park Safety Net: A Community-led Violence Prevention Campaign Kelly Service Learning Project—April and May, 2010 Number of students: 50 student limit Total hours: 20 hours with an option for more through BPNC (this includes one hour for writing a paper) Timeline: April 12 – 15 Sign-up April 16 First meeting, 1 hour April 21 Sign-making Party (optional), 2 hours April 22 Trip to Springfield, 10 hours MANDATORY May 1 Youth Town Hall Meeting @ IIT, 6 hours May 5 Wrap Up Meeting, 1 hour Goal: Students will have an opportunity to get involved in the Brighton Park Safety Net, a community-led campaign to end youth violence in Brighton Park. They will learn about the history of the campaign, analyze its impact on the community, and discuss what additional resources are needed to address violence in the community. Youth will also research, discuss, and develop their own opinions regarding youth incarceration and the mainstream media’s portrayal of youth. This will prepare them to represent the Brighton Park community at the Safety Net Works Youth Town Hall on Saturday, May 1. Students can also develop outreach strategies to help promote the Town Hall event to the community. Students will have an opportunity to travel to Springfield and join youth from around the state in a demonstration against youth violence. This project is only open to the first 50 students who sign up. Please sign up HERE IMPORTANT REMINDER...YOU MUST FINISH THE PROJECT IN ORDER TO BE AWARDED THE HOURS! NO PARTIAL HOURS WILL BE GIVEN.

Southwest Youth Collaborative Is Looking For Students!

(April 12)
The Generation Y of the Southwest Youth Collaborative is doing a campaign on Educational Rights and they are looking for students to participate in this project! If you are in need of hours and would like to participate please see Mr. Magdaleno during 8th period. Generation Y meets every Wednesday at the offices of SWYC on 6400 S. Kedzie (773)476-3534. Please complete a pre-approval form prior to you going.

Darfur Sister School Community Outreach Event!

(March 26)
We are going to inform the Kelly Community on the events that are occcuring in Darfur. We will set up tables and pass out literature and ask for additional donations. Please register HERE

Darfur Sister Schools Program Service Learning

(March 22)
Education is every child's basic right. Children in refugee camps who have survived the Darfur conflict are no different. For Darfuris, education is essential to restoring hope for a productive future and dignity to people driven from their homes. The goal of this project is to assist the children in Darfur with their educational needs. Registration is open until Friday March 26 at 3:00pm. Students will be awarded 20 service learning hours at the completion of the project.
